I live in the land of a million Gods. We pray to them everyday and offer them our sacrifices of income, while they provide for us the comforts the land and the seeds of delight.
When I awake, the Gods of XFM and Classic fm send down a thousand blissful melodies from the skies above my radio. They announce the daily weather, traffic and news in a ritualistic sermon which captivates my waking mind, and their morning songs beat away in my head for the rest of the day. I place on my body the divine clothes brought to me by the Gods of Armani and Ralph Lauren. I cover myself with heavenly make up dust from the God of CHANEL and MAX FACTOR. As I step out the door, the Gods of GM and Ford magically catapult me from one destination to another, bringing me safely from home to office and back. The gentle vibration of the engine accompanies me on my journey, like the sound of a thousand angel wings that carry me through the air. At work, the Gods of Microsoft and Apple watch over us while we suckle from the heavenly bosom of the internet projected onto their imperfect vessels of “the computer”. Their great work is supported by the deities of Google, Yahoo!, LYCOS and many others, who nurture us and teach us in every way, everyday. At night, in the comfort of my crib, the Gods of Sky and ITV, HBO and FOX speak to me through the boxed shrine that is the TV. They tell me about what the world was, is and will be. They tell me what I should do, how I should think and they entertain me. They are just some of my Gods.
I go to bed safe in the knowledge that all these Gods will provide for me as long as I keep worshipping them and paying them their dues, the sacrifice of my life blood and my money.
REALLY!
I would like to think that I am not materialistic and my possessions are just objects, with no thoughts and feelings. But I don’t believe in worship of deities, or monotheistic religions. Nor do I advocate it as the alternative to ridding us of the evils of the modern capitalist materialism that is invading our lives. The only thing I can worship is myself and in that universe of “me” I would like there to be no other company logo but the essence of “me”.
